Two corridors, one purpose

The region's landlocked countries (Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, eastern DRC, South Sudan) depend on their coastal neighbours' seaports for international trade. Two main corridors structure these flows: the Northern Corridor, starting at the Port of Mombasa (Kenya), and the Central Corridor, starting at the Port of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

Governance

The Northern Corridor has a dedicated coordination body (the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority), bringing together several member states to smooth transit. The Central Corridor has its own coordination mechanism.

Limits of this guide

Indicative distances, transit times and the precise institutions attached to each corridor segment are covered in dedicated entries on the platform's corridors map; this guide does not reproduce those figures, which change with infrastructure and traffic conditions.
