Purpose
The EAC Certificate of Origin lets an exporter prove that goods originate from a partner state under EAC rules of origin, a condition for the duty exemption on intra-EAC trade.
Who issues it
The certificate is generally issued by the competent revenue authority or chamber of commerce of the exporting partner state, under procedures specific to each country. The exact procedure, supporting documents and timelines are not reproduced here: verify with the national revenue authority (KRA, TRA, URA, RRA, OBR, DGDA) or the relevant chamber of commerce.
Points to watch
- EAC rules of origin set out substantial transformation criteria and local value-added thresholds, not detailed here: verify with the EAC Secretariat.
- A good re-exported without sufficient processing may not qualify.
