The EAC Common External Tariff (CET)

The EAC CET applies tariff bands to imports from outside the EAC, with sensitive product lists treated differently by partner state.

Principle

The EAC CET is structured in tariff bands applied by product category (raw materials, intermediate goods, finished products). A sensitive products list carries specific rates, distinct from the general bands, to protect certain local value chains.

What varies

Exact band rates, the composition of the sensitive list and transitional derogations granted to certain partner states change by decision of the EAC Council of Ministers. This guide does not reproduce numeric rates: use the platform's duty and tax simulator and the official CET publication for the current year.

Where to check

The EAC Secretariat and national revenue authorities (KRA, TRA, URA, RRA, OBR, DGDA) publish CET updates and implementation notes.
